Surge immunity test is a basic EMC test. It is intended to test the capability of EUT under specified operational conditions to withstand voltage surges caused by over-voltages from power system switching transients and lightning transients. The standard IEC 61000-4-5 defines the test levels, test equipment, test setups and test procedures for surge immunity test.
The surge generator is to simulate the switching and lightning transients, and then evaluating the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment when subjected to surges. In standard IEC61000-4-5, two types of combination wave generators are specified for different applications. 10/700μs combination wave generator is used to test ports intended for connection to outdoor symmetrical communication lines, like communication equipment and communication lines. The 1.2/50μs combination wave generator is used in all other cases.
1.2/50μs Combination Wave Generator
1.2/50μs combination wave generator can generate an open-circuit voltage surge 1.2/50μs and an open-circuit current surge 8/20μs, The effective output impedance is 2ohm. the surge is applied to the AC or DC supply lines of the EUT.
10/700μs Combination Wave Generator
10/700μs combination wave generator can generate an open-circuit voltage surge 10/700μs, and an open-circuit current surge 5/320μs, which is more representative of actual surges encountered in the outdoor telecommunication networks. The effective output impedance is 40ohm.
lightning surge testing is a destructive test. The test results shall be classified in terms of the loss of function or degradation of performance of the equipment under test, relative to a performance level defined by its manufacturer or the requestor of the test, or agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser of the product.
For surge immunity test, PEGO has launched multiple models of lightning surge generators to response the users with different testing demand. Model LSG-6K10 can generate 6KV output voltage, and built-in 300V/10A CDN (coupling and decoupling network). Model LSG-1020 can generate 10KV output voltage and built-in 380V/20A 3-phase CDN. The test voltage, output impedance and CDN can be customized as per the customer’s requirements.
