IEC60335-2-6 : Household Cooking Appliance Test Solution

IEC 60335-2-6:2014 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in February 2014 and came into effect on June 1, 2018. In China’s standard classification, it falls under Y63 household electrothermal appliances, and in the international standard classification, it belongs to 97.040.20 Cooktops, worktops, ovens and similar appliances.

This standard is part of the IEC 60335 series, under the general title: household and similar electrical appliances. It sets detailed safety requirements for stationary cooking ranges, hobs, ovens, grills and similar appliances. It applies to stationary electric cooking ranges, hobs, ovens and similar appliances for household use, with a rated voltage not exceeding 250V for single – phase (single – phase appliances connected between phase and neutral) and not exceeding 480V for others. It also includes requirements for some marine ovens. It specifically covers the following aspects:

Design and Manufacturing Safety

Require that appliances do not overheat, produce sparks or smoke due to accidents or failures during use, reducing the risk of fire and scalding. For example, standardize the design and layout of heating elements to prevent local overheating.

Protection Measures

Take appropriate measures to prevent unauthorized persons like children from accessing hazardous areas such as heating elements and power cords. For instance, install protective barriers and safety doors.

Labeling and Warning

Equip with appropriate instruction and warning labels to inform users of usage limitations, precautions and potential hazards. For example, clearly mark high – temperature parts and operation taboos.

Electrical Safety including Grounding

Have proper grounding or zero – connection measures to ensure safety when the equipment shell is electrified. Also, comply with relevant regulatory standards for electrical insulation levels, electrical clearances/cross – over distances and protection classes.

It aims to ensure the safe use of fixed cooking appliances for household and similar purposes and prevent users from being harmed by electrical, mechanical and thermal factors.

The IEC 60335-2-6 standard involves many testing equipment. The following table lists the testing equipment corresponding to the relevant clauses.
