Tumbling barrel-The Recommended Apparatus for Free Fall Repeated Test

Tumbling barrel also be called as rotating barrel, normally it consists of barrel and control box, the barrel rotates and causes a free fall combined with a tumbling motion of the specimen. The dimension of the barrel is given in figure A.1 of IEC60068-2-31 standard. The tumbling barrel has a smooth, rigid steel test surface at each end, with a thickness of 3mm, and backed by hardwood of between 10mm and 19mm thickness.

Test severity is classified as 50 falls, 100 falls, 200 falls, 500 falls and 1000 falls, and falling height is generally 500mm or 1000mm. For example, the IEC60320-1 standard stipulates that the appliance coupler should withstand 500 or 100 falls; the IEC60598-1 standard stipulates that the socket-outlet should withstand 100/50/25 falls at the height of 500mm; and the IEC60884-1 standard stipulates that accessories should withstand 1000/500/100 falls.
