1. Scope
The IEC61851-1 applies to equipment for charging electric road vehicles at standard a.c. supply voltages (as per IEC60038) up to 690V and at d.c. voltages up to 1000V, and for providing electrical power for any additional services on the vehicle if required when connected to the supply network.
2. Safety and Performance Requirements for Equipment
The IEC61851-1 sets strict requirements for various components of charging equipment. For example, regarding charging plugs and connectors, it stipulates the impact test requirements, that is, they should still work properly after being dropped from a height of one meter onto a concrete surface eight times. This ensures their reliability in case of accidental collisions that may occur in daily use. At the same time, it also takes into account the scenario of vehicle run – over. It requires that under a force of 5000 N, the plug or connector shall not pose any electrical or mechanical hazards to personnel, simulating the possible run – over situation of charging equipment during vehicle operation.
